WanderLyn Get Your 10K in .... Orlando Part 7 New Years Day at Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure

New Year’s Day at Universal? Yes, please.

After stacking up those park miles all week, we kicked off January 1 with a slightly later start — 10 AM gate entry — ready for a day that leaned less on coaster chaos and more on immersive shows, more magic, and experiences people often walk right past.

Because sometimes the real magic isn’t the longest line in the park — it’s the thing hiding in plain sight. Like Voodoo Donuts - we walked by so many days, and today was the day. AMAZING - they have such a wonderful variety and good coffee to boot. We started the day on a fabulous sugar high.

๐ŸŽฌ Morning at Universal Studios

We started in Universal Studios Florida, focusing on shows that deliver big energy without draining your stamina.

๐Ÿ”น Bourne Stuntacular

If you’ve ever wondered how movies blur the line between reality and illusion — this is it.

Live actors sprinting across the stage.
Massive digital screens seamlessly blending environments.
Explosions. Precision. Jaw-dropping transitions.

It’s part stunt show, part tech wizardry, and completely mind-blowing. Even if you’re not a die-hard Bourne fan, this one’s a must. No photos allowed inside, but trust me, WORTH it!

๐Ÿ”น Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show

This is one of those “hidden gems” that isn’t exactly hidden — but somehow still overlooked.

Funny. Slightly gross. Totally fascinating.
You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at practical effects used in horror films, and the hosts keep the crowd laughing the entire time.

Pro tip: sit close enough to see the details — but maybe not so close that you become part of the demonstration. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ”น Animal Actors on Location

Comedy meets cuteness. Trained dogs, birds, and surprise stars show off their skills in clever little sketches. It’s light, charming, and a great way to slow your pace without losing entertainment value.

Perfect reset before lunch.

๐Ÿด 1 PM – Lunch at The Leaky Cauldron

Step straight into the wizarding world for a cozy, storybook-style lunch inside The Leaky Cauldron.

Rustic wooden beams. Flickering lantern light. Stone walls that feel centuries old. It’s immersive in the best way — like you’ve truly slipped into Diagon Alley for a proper British meal.

On the menu?

๐Ÿฅง Hearty classics like Cottage Pie and Bangers & Mash
๐Ÿฅช Fresh sandwiches with a wizarding twist
๐Ÿฅค And of course… Butterbeer (because when in Diagon Alley…)

It’s warm, filling, and the perfect midday reset before hopping over to Islands of Adventure.

Of course, we also took this time to shop the stores, and do a little more magic. It was so nice not to feel rushed and really be immersed in the Harry Potter world.

๐Ÿš‚ Park Hop Time

You can walk between parks — or hop aboard the Hogwarts Express for a themed transition that never gets old. (Yes, even after multiple rides.)

๐Ÿฐ Islands of Adventure – Afternoon Delights

✨ Afternoon Reset – Back to the Wizarding World

With interactive wands in hand, we followed the brass medallions embedded in the pavement and tried the spell locations we missed earlier in the week.

There’s something unexpectedly delightful about perfecting your wand flick until a window display responds and your wand vibrates and lights up. The new wands were just so fun, and because we were getting better, we were able to trigger multiple spells in some locations. It was silly and giddy and absolutely fabulous.

It turns you from observer into participant — and honestly, it slows the pace in the best way.

We also took time to wander the shops without rushing:
๐Ÿง™‍♂️ Dervish and Banges for wizarding gear and clothing
๐Ÿฌ Honeydukes for colorful sweets and Chocolate Frogs

We really had a great time.

๐ŸŽฉ Seuss Landing – Whimsy Mode Activated

From cobblestone magic to curvy, candy-colored chaos — Seuss Landing is like walking straight into a Dr. Seuss illustration.

๐ŸŽข The Cat in the Hat

This indoor dark ride is pure nostalgia with a mischievous twist.

You board a couch-like ride vehicle and spin gently (okay… sometimes unexpectedly) through scenes from The Cat in the Hat.

Bright colors. Blacklight effects.
Thing 1 and Thing 2 causing delightful mayhem.

It’s whimsical, slightly chaotic, and wonderfully classic — a perfect reset after more intense attractions.

๐Ÿš‚ The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!

If you only ride one thing in Seuss Landing — make it this.

Elevated above the land, the trolley gently glides along a track giving you a storybook tour of Seuss Landing from above. You’ll hear narration inspired by Sneetches and other Seuss tales while spotting hidden details below.

It’s calm. It’s charming. It’s surprisingly scenic. And during the holidays? Even more magical with festive touches throughout the land.

๐ŸŽ„ Grinchmas – A Brilliant Live Production

We capped the afternoon with Grinchmas: The Musical, a live stage production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas — and WOW.

This is not a “quick holiday filler” show.

It’s Broadway-level energy:
✨ Elaborate, colorful sets that feel straight out of Whoville
๐ŸŽถ Catchy, high-energy musical numbers
๐ŸŽญ A Grinch performance that balances snark and heart perfectly
๐Ÿถ And yes — Max the Dog absolutely steals scenes

The show builds beautifully toward that iconic heart-growing moment, and you can feel the audience melt right along with it. It was festive. It was joyful. And it might have been one of the most unexpectedly standout experiences of the entire Universal day.

๐Ÿฝ️ 6:30 PM – Dinner at Mythos

Reservation secured at MYTHOS — and yes, it lives up to the hype.

This award-winning full-service restaurant serves modern cuisine inside a cavernous, mythical setting that sparks your imagination. Think glowing rock formations, dramatic architecture, and a menu that feels elevated compared to typical park dining.

After days of park snacks and quick bites, sitting down here feels like a celebration. The Lamb Hummus and Gyro plate were so very very yummy. We were all very happy campers.

✨ Farewell Magic

Before calling it a night, we wandered back into Hogsmeade.

The cobblestone streets glow.
The castle looms dramatically overhead.
We saw the The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle projection show. Oh my goodness, it was so good. It lights up the castle magically with flying wizards and changing scenes - it’s the kind of moment that makes you pause — and soak in the entire trip.

✈️ Bonus: Travel Home Day Recovery

Because WanderLyn doesn’t just go hard — she recovers smart. Because my flight was early evening, I had time for a little more magic.

๐Ÿณ Character Breakfast at Cape May Cafรฉ

Beachy vibes. Minnie energy. Relaxed coastal atmosphere. Cape May Cafรฉ offers a character breakfast that feels cheerful but not chaotic. It’s a sweet way to close out your Orlando adventure with one more dose of Disney charm before heading home.

(Pro tip: make reservations in advance — this one fills up.)

๐Ÿ’†‍♀️ Recharge Mode: Mandara Spa – Swan & Dolphin

Just a five-minute walk from Cape May Cafรฉ, Mandara Spa at the Swan & Dolphin Resorts is the ultimate reset button. After logging 10K+ steps a day, your body will thank you.

Spa amenities include:

  • Steam rooms

  • Relaxation lounges

  • Luxurious treatment rooms

  • Massage therapy options ranging from deep tissue to stress-relief sessions

  • And you have use of the resort pool and jacuzzi.

My massage felt so good on my tired legs and feet. Then I just chilled out in the lounge area after a long long hot shower. It was quiet and restorative. The perfect way to transition from theme park adrenaline back to real life.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest takeaways from this Orlando adventure?

How differently the parks feel depending on how you plan your days.

When you build a multi-day strategy — mixing days with Express Pass and days without — you experience two completely different versions of the parks.

With Express, you conquer.
You maximize.
You move quickly and stack the headliners.

Without Express, you slow down.
You notice details.
You prioritize shows, interactive moments, atmosphere, and those hidden gems that don’t always top the thrill lists.

And honestly? Both approaches are worth doing.

There is so much to do between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure that it’s impossible to see it all in one rushed visit. The shows alone could fill a full day. Add interactive wand magic, seasonal entertainment like Grinchmas, immersive dining, and spontaneous discoveries — and you realize these parks reward repeat visits.

And the same is absolutely true at Walt Disney World. Planning multiple days with a mix of Lightning Lane strategy and slower, unstructured park time completely changes your experience. Some days are about rope drop efficiency and stacking rides — and other days are about lingering in World Showcase, catching a stage show, or soaking in the atmosphere that makes Disney feel timeless.

Neither resort is a “one and done.”
They’re layered destinations that reveal more the longer you stay.

Universal isn’t just a coaster park, and Disney isn’t just about castles and characters. After this trip, I’m already looking forward to spending even more time here in the future — exploring what we missed, revisiting what we loved, and maybe trying an entirely new strategy next time.

Because the best trips aren’t about doing everything. They’re about discovering there’s always more waiting for you when you come back. ✨

Until next time,

Move well. Eat Well. Wander well.
